Newport - American Versailles
Excursion in New York
Tour Price : $900 Duration : 12 hours Languages: English
Newport, the place where crème de la crème of the US society used to reside during the 19th century, today is a nice resort located in a 3.5 hours drive outside New York. It was called the American Versailles for a reason, as the richest citizens preferred to build enormous manors that could please the tastes of the most sophisticated and demanding European monarchs.
During this tour you will have the opportunity to visit three of the most interesting buildings in this area: The Breakers, Marble House and the Elms. All three were owned by Vanderbilts, who were considered as one of the richest families of their time. Unfortunately, their New York real estate was demolished as the city grew higher and higher, so these Newport residences are the only thing left to explore the fascinating lifestyles common to the Golden Age of American capitalism.
You will find a lot of reminiscences to European palaces as well as exclusive features that can be seen only in these buildings. Not to mention that all these manors were built using the most expensive and exclusive materials available at their time. Newport is a fine example of sophisticated European influence on the US, which has taken roots in this soil and was grown into something different and new.
