Big Almaty Lake

Big Almaty Lake (Bolshoye Almatinskoye Ozero) is one of the most beautiful mountain lakes near Almaty. It is located in the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains, in the gorge of the Bolshaya Almatinka River, at an altitude of 2510 meters above sea level.

The lake lies in a natural mountain cavity, resembling a sparkling mirror surrounded on all sides by majestic peaks. Three main summits rise above the lake: Soviet Peak (4317 m) in the southeast, Ozerniy Peak (4110 m) in the south, and Tourist Peak (3954 m) in the southwest.

Despite its name, the lake is not very large. It measures about 1.6 km in length, just under 1 km in width, and reaches a maximum depth of 38 meters.

The water of the lake changes color depending on the season, time of day, or weather conditions. It can vary from light green to deep turquoise blue, always reflecting the surrounding mountain beauty.

Located only 25 km from Almaty, Big Almaty Lake is a perfect escape from the city bustle. At 2500 meters above sea level, it offers fresh air, tranquility, and breathtaking views, making it one of the most popular destinations for both locals and visitors.
