Goroka Show - “Where the Highlands Come Alive”*

Every year on PNG Independence weekend in September, Goroka turns into the biggest family reunion in the Highlands.

*What it is:*  

For 2 days, 100+ tribes from all over PNG come to Goroka National Park. Not to perform for tourists... but to celebrate who we are. Huli Wigmen with 3-foot wigs. Asaro Mudmen with grey clay masks and long bamboo fingers. Chimbu warriors, Enga tribes, Sepik crocodile men... all in full bilas.

*What you’ll see + feel:*  

5am: Kundu drums start. The ground vibrates.  

8am: The park fills with color. Feathers taller than houses. Face paint in red, yellow, black. Shells, teeth, bird of paradise plumes.  

All day: Sing-sings. Groups stomp, chant, dance for hours. Dust in the air, sun on your skin, kids laughing, aunties selling hot corn + mumu pork.  

The sound: 50 groups singing different songs at once. It’s loud. It’s proud. It gives you goosebumps.

*Why it matters:*  

Long ago, these tribes were enemies. Now they meet as brothers on the dance ground. No fighting, just pride. Old men teach young boys their dance. Mamas show daughters how to make bilas. Culture doesn’t die here - it’s taught live.

*For visitors:*  

Wear old clothes + shoes you don’t love. You WILL get dusty and painted 😄 Bring small kina for food + crafts. Ask before taking photos: “Brada, can I take photo?” People will smile and pose. 

Goroka Show isn’t a show. It’s us. If you want to understand the Highlands heart, come in September. You’ll leave with dust on your feet and PNG in your heart.
