*Mt. Hagen Show - “The Grandfather of All Sing-Sings”*

Every August, right before Goroka, Mt. Hagen in Western Highlands goes BIG. This is the oldest, biggest cultural show in PNG. If Goroka is family backyard party, Hagen is the Olympics of culture.

*What it is:*  

3 days at Keltiga Show Grounds. 80+ tribes, 10,000+ dancers. But here it’s on another level - more tribes, more tourists, more everything. Hagen is famous for 2 things: *wigmen* and *moka exchange*.

*What you’ll see + feel:*  

*Wigmen*: Men from Hagen area grow their hair for 5-10 years to make huge traditional wigs. Some wigs have 20+ real human hair pieces, decorated with feathers, beads, clay. When they shake their heads, the whole ground shakes. Looks like moving forests.

*Scale*: Bigger groups, louder drums, more colors. Chimbu, Enga, Huli, Mendi... everyone comes. You’ll see tribes you never heard of. The dance ground feels endless.

*Moka*: Between dances, you’ll see tribes giving pigs, kina, shells to each other. This is “moka” - our way of making peace + building relationships. Not fighting with spears anymore... we fight with generosity now.

*For visitors:*  

Dust is real here - Keltiga grounds get red and dry. Bring hat, sunglasses, water. Hagen weather is cool but sun is strong. Food stalls everywhere: mumu pork, Highlands vegetables, fresh corn. 

Photos are ok but same rule: Ask first “Ating I orait?” People are proud and will pose with their bilas.

*Why it matters:*  

Hagen Show started in 1961 so tribes could meet peacefully instead of fighting. Still works today. You’ll see old enemies dancing side by side. That’s PNG strength.
