** Explore ancient medieval towns and fortresses. **
Transylvania is home to some of Europe's best-preserved medieval towns, most notably Brasov, featuring Old Saxon architecture and citadel ruins and Sibiu with its cobblestone streets and pastel-colored houses. Visitors to Transylvania will also encounter stunning castles such Bran, near Brasov, - a Gothic fairy-tale structure, often associated with 15th century Walachian Prince Vlad Tepes, the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula. While the connection with Vlad is tenuous, the deep bond of local villagers with the legend is not.
Transylvania's multi-ethnic heritage (including German and Hungarian) is delightfully apparent in the folk costumes, architecture, cuisine, music and festivals. Colorful centuries-old traditions are alive and well in the small villages of Transylvania. People here still make a living at such time-honored occupations as shepherds, weavers, blacksmiths and carpenters.
Day 1. Bucharest-Bran-Brasov
Bran: Castle of Dracula
Brasov medieval town highlights: Black Church, Citadel of Brasov, Ecaterina's Gate, White Tower, Black Tower, The Blacksmiths Bastion, The Weavers Bastion, The Ropemakers Bastion, The Drapers Bastion.
Day 2. Brasov-Sibiu
Evangelical Church, The Bridge of Lies, Historical Center, The Stairs Passage, Brukenthal Museum, Towers and Bastions.
Day 3. Sibiu-Biertan-Sighisoara
Fortified Church of Biertan - The architectonic ensemble from Biertan impresses by a harmonious matching in position, by its aesthetic and historic value and especially by the original substance preserved since the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century, characteristics which determined its inclusion on The UNESCO List of World Patrimony.
Sighisoara is one of the few inhabited fortified towns in the world and it provides a splendid example of medieval town planning. Here, all the elements of the medieval world have been perfectly preserved. Tour highlights: The Clock Tower & History Museum, The Church on the Hill, House of Dracula, The pupils roofed stairways.
Day 4. Sighisoara-Prejmer-Harman-Bucharest
Fortified church of Prejmer - One of Eastern Europe’s best preserved fortified churches lies 16km northeast of Brasov. Surrounding a cross-shaped church (originally built by the Teutonic knights) are walls 12m high and 4m thick that protected the church and Prejmer’s inhabitants during times of war, when each family would retreat into its own room. Fortified church of Harman - it is bit smaller than Prejmer fortress but matching in charm and architectural value, certainly it is worth a stop on our way to Bucharest.
