The Lantern Festival: When the World Glows with Light and Stories
I still remember the first time I saw a real lantern festival. I was a kid, standing on my father's shoulders in a crowd so thick I could feel the warmth of strangers on both sides. Above us, a dragon made of silk and fire twisted through the smoke, and somewhere in the distance, someone was setting off firecrackers that sounded like popcorn exploding in a giant pan. But what I remember most were the lanterns—hundreds of them, floating up into a sky already heavy with the full moon. My father pointed and said, "Make a wish." I didn't know what to wish for, so I wished for more candy. Later, he told me the story of why we do this every year.
The Story That Lit Up the Sky
A long time ago, there was a beautiful crane that flew down from heaven. It wasn't just any crane—it was the pet of the Jade Emperor, the big boss of the heavens. Some villagers, not knowing whose bird it was, accidentally killed it. And the Jade Emperor? He was furious. The kind of furious that makes you want to burn down an entire village on the 15th day of the first lunar month.
