I still remember the first time I saw a lantern festival—standing on my father's shoulders, watching silk dragons twist through smoke as hundreds of lanterns floated into the full moon. "Make a wish," he said. The festival began with a legend: a village saved itself from an angry god by lighting lanterns, making the valley look like it was already burning. Ever since, on the first full moon of the year, we light lanterns to celebrate—and to hope. Families gather, eat sweet tangyuan (round like the moon), and walk through seas of light. It's the grand finale of Chinese New Year—one night of glow, togetherness, and quiet wishes. Next time you see a lantern, make one too.

The Temple of Heaven Park (Tian Tan) is one of Beijing’s most iconic and spiritually significant sites— a 273-hectare imperial complex in the city’s south, built in 1420 during the Ming Dynasty by Emperor Yongle (the same ruler who commissioned the Forbidden City). It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its purpose was simple yet sacred: Ming and Qing emperors came here annually to pray to heaven for good harvests and national prosperity.
