10. Canada: Vancouver’s Stanley Park Seawall

This is a walk to remember, offering magnificent scenery along the entire route. The stone seawall that was originally built to protect Stanley Park from water erosion has become one of the most popular walking tours in the world. The paved pathway atop the seawall attracts not only visitors to Vancouver but is also the favorite route for local cyclists, skaters, and joggers. The seawall begins at Coal Harbor and extends 13.6 miles (22km) around Stanley Park, along Sunset Beach, and past False Creek until it reaches Kitsilano Beach Park. You can see incredible sunsets, golden sand beaches, and an amazing rock formation known as Siwash Rock. You also have views of Vancouver’s cityscape of high-rise buildings and the sweeping span of the Lion’s Gate Bridge. Table Mountain National Park attracts thousands of visitors each year who wish to experience the marvelous scenes offered from the top of the 3562 foot peak. The trail runs through the Platteklip Gorge beside a clear mountain stream and emerges atop a level, 2 mile wide plateau edged by rugged cliffs. An easier descent is provided by the Table Mountain Cableway.

3. Turkey: Istanbul’s Theodosius Walls 

A walk along the top of the ancient city walls of Istanbul takes you on a historic journey across stones that have been in place since 408AD. Originally erected by the Emperor Constantine and rebuilt by Theodosius III, the double walls have repelled invaders for hundreds of years. Most of the walls are so well preserved that one can still walk atop them and see Yedikule, the Fortress of Seven Towers, as well as visit the Mihrimah Mosque and the Chora Museum. Nearly 4 miles of walls wind from the Golden Horn to the Sea of Marmara and grant fabulous views of the historic city and the surrounding landscape.

The Thames Path National Trail actually runs the entire 182 mile length of the Thames River, but it is the 7.5 mile stretch between Greenwich and the London Bridge known as the Jubilee Walkway that offers the most popular walking tour. A stroll along the Thames Path gives you marvelous views of some of London’s most iconic landmarks, including the Tower of London, Big Ben, the London Eye and St. Paul’s Cathedral. Plenty of riverside pubs along the way provide somewhere to replenish your thirst, and you can catch a boat back to your starting point if you get tired of walking.

1. New Zealand: Aukland’s Coast to Coast Walkway

There aren’t very many places in the world where you can walk across an entire country in a single day. The Coast to Coast Walkway of Aukland, New Zealand has got to be the most impressive walking tour in the world, taking you a total of 16 km. from the Pacific Ocean to the Tasman Sea. This popular trail takes you through city streets, across volcanic craters, and within lovely rainforests. The lush, fertile landscape and thriving fishing grounds of Aukland have earned the city the nickname, “Tamaki Makaurau” which means “spouse desired by a hundred lovers.” As you explore the Coast to Coast Walkway you will understand why this amazing place is so desirable, as you have a chance to view Aukland from the Sky Tower, or visit the waterfalls of Waitakere. You can complete the entire trail in about 5 or 6 hours if you aren’t too distracted by the spectacular sights along the way.
