Information about Merzouga

A small village in the Sahara Desert in Morocco is Merzouga. Located on the edge of Erg Chebbi, a wide set of sand dunes, most tourists travel by camel to get an authentic taste of Berber life. The largest natural underground body of water in Morocco can be found in Merzouga. Other than camel the only way to get around the city is on foot. Be sure to avoid the midday heat.

A must-see is the sun rising or setting over the dunes. Attend a folk dance and listen to G’naui music or arrange for Senegalese musicians and dancers to visit your party. There is plenty of wildlife to be seen here; ducks, flamingos, Ruddy Sheldrack, Kittllitz’s Arabian buzzard, falcons, desert sparrows, Algerian sand lizards, Berber skinks, snakes, gerbils, desert hedgehogs, field mice, desert foxes and scarab beetles.

A must-do is taking a camel safari. There is no better way to explore the dunes than by camel. Do your research and make sure you choose a reputable guide for this tour so you can be assured you have meals, water, tents and everything you need. Ask many questions. Some trips include showers and music while others do not.
