COMMENTS ABOUT Bulgaria:
The Republic of Bulgaria is a southwestern European country with an eastern shoreline along the Black Sea, and shared borders with Romania, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece and Turkey. The climate in Bulgaria is fairly mild year round, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Springtime in Bulgaria sees beautiful flowers blooming throughout the picturesque countryside, and the fall is usually long and pleasant.
The people of Bulgaria are warm and friendly, with a culture that includes ancient Thracian and Slavic traditions and folklore that includes many superstitions about evil spirits. Their ritual fire-dance, Nestinarstvo, is listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Bulgaria is a place that is rich in ancient history, and UNESCO has listed nine landmarks –some manmade and some natural-in Bulgaria as World Heritage Sites.
Visitors to this beautiful country can see some of the most amazing rock formations on the planet, such as the 7 meter high cylindrical stone columns of the Stone Forest in the Varna Region, the natural phenomenon of the Melnik Pyramids that look like the man-made Egyptian Pyramids, and some of the most incredible and fascinating natural formations called the Belogradchik Rocks. These amazing rock outcroppings look like people, castles and other recognizable shapes and have names like Adam and Eve, the Sphinx and the Horseman. Nature lovers also enjoy touring the Pirin National Park and the Sreburna Nature Reserve.
The ancient city of Nesebar is a wonderful place to explore, and the country offers many other interesting historical landmarks, such as the Boyana Church, the Rila Monastery, and the Rock Churches of Ivano. The Madara Horseman is a site not to miss, a relief carved into the side of the Madara Plateau in 710 that shows a man on horseback thrusting a spear into a lion.
In addition to Bulgaria’s historical attractions and natural landmarks are its beaches and resorts, such as Bodrost near Bglagoevrad, and Mauritius Beach in Sofia. There’s also a famous ice-skating rink in Varna that attracts both locals and international tourists to enjoy a day gliding on the ice. Exploring caves in Bulgaria is another interesting activity, such as Devil’s Throat Cave of Garlo and Bacho Kiro Cave in Dryanovo.
