Information about Split

The city of Split is one of the oldest in Croatia and occupies a peninsula located along the east coast of the Adriatic Sea. Low rolling hills provide a landward backdrop for the city and its surrounding seaside towns with a pleasant Mediterranean climate providing plenty of sunny days for enjoying the beautiful scenery.

The busy seaport of Split attracts cruise ships and offers ferry transport to nearby islands like Vis and Hvar. During the summer months Split is alive with music and dance festivals, attracting crowds of fun-loving European visitors. The city is still centered mainly around its original establishment, the famous 4th century Diocletian Palace, which is remarkably preserved.

The breathtaking waterfront area features lovely, pristine beaches and main, pedestrians-only avenue through Split is the Marmontova, which is lined with shops and cafes. The Mestrovic Gallery attracts many visitors, as do the Prokurative and the Cathedral of Domnius with the city’s iconic bell.

Private Guide in Split
Matt Split, Croatia

In October 2011, my family took a cruise to the Adriatic. I wanted to have Split as a port to visit, as my wife's paternal grandfather emigrated to America from a small town around Split in 1911. She was in Croatia in the 1990's with her parents and got to see where her maternal grandparents came from, meet relatives she never met, etc. but they could not get to Split due to the war in lower Croatia. So when I booked a cruise, I wanted Split on the itinerary. I never told my wife I was trying to get a tour guide for the visit to Split in the hopes the tour guide may be able to take us to the town ...
