Guide Licensing Information for Italy
Guides face different requirements in different provinces of Italy. In order to get a license, it’s usually required to enroll in courses, pass the exams in the local municipality and have a living permit. The written and oral exams take place in the region, where the future guide is looking forward to working. During the exams the solicitor has to demonstrate profound knowledge in economy, arts, geography, regional history and tourist legislation of Italy. The qualification is subject to confirmation after several years.
The courses, however, do not guarantee that the license will be obtained automatically, while working without a license will lead to serious problems. The police are checking documents even during tours, and if the guide won’t be able to present his or her license, a substantial fine or even deportation will ensue.
The licenses are issued to EU citizens over 18 of age, as well as citizens of other countries, who are living and working in Italy longer than 3 years. The most essential requirements are a diploma in a domain close to the guiding activity (archeology, history, arts, etc.), diploma in tourism and decent Italian language skills. However, keep in mind that the requirements may vary greatly from one region to another, so you will have to check the details depending on the place you’re looking forward working in.
